Abstract

This paper explains and evaluates the importance of oral literature for the identity formation of Afro-Colombian communities. To this end, in the first place, it is exposed how the hegemonic discourse of the official history of Colombia has put in the background the traditions and knowledge of the national Afro-Colombians and how their contribution to processes such as Independence has been diminished. This contextual evaluation allows that, in the second part of the text, it is demonstrated why it is necessary to integrate traditional oral literature, specifically the coplas, to the formal education received by girls, boys and adolescents from Afro-Colombian communities.
