Abstract

In recent decades, the idea that music and the arts in general are effective tools for resolving conflicts and harmonizing divided societies has spread. But is music an ally of social transformation per se? Isn’t it just a tool adaptable to multiple contexts and interests of diverse actors? Can it not also be
used to stir up hatred, dehumanize and silence the adversary? This article will attempt to provide answers to these questions based on a review of some research carried out around the world on war and post-conflict contexts. The purpose is to shed light on the possibilities and shortcomings of music
as a tool to build peace, an exercise necessary in the current scenario of the post-peace agreement with farc-ep, which requires imaginative strategies to overcome more than half a century of war.
